We are looking for talented, enthusiastic individuals to undertake digital forensic examinations on a variety of digital devices, such as mobile phones or computers. You will be playing your part in investigating some of the most serious counter terrorism operations.
The Counter Terrorism Policing London is responsible for leading Counter Terrorism-related investigations in the whole London area, as well as Prevent work across London’s boroughs to help to stop those vulnerable to radicalisation from being drawn into terrorism.
Counter Terrorism Policing London is also responsible for supporting the Eastern Region Special Operations Unit (ERSOU) with investigations and provides investigative and operational support to forces across the Eastern region as required.
In addition to this, Counter Terrorism Policing London also hosts a number of national and international functions on behalf of Counter Terrorism Policing. This includes the War Crimes Team, the National Terrorist Financial Investigation Unit, the Counter Terrorism Internet Referral Unit, which is part of the National Digital Exploitation Service hosted within Counter Terrorism Policing London.

This role offers the opportunity to join Counter Terrorism Command’s Digital Media Examinations department as a Digital Forensic Technician, supporting investigations into serious counter terrorism offences through the forensic examination of digital devices. Learn more.
Successful candidates will demonstrate excellent computer skills, strong numeracy, and exceptional attention to detail, organisation, and time management. A sound knowledge of modern digital technologies and the forensic opportunities they present, together with an understanding of the challenges faced by law enforcement, is essential. The role also requires the ability to communicate complex technical information clearly, build effective relationships with colleagues and stakeholders, and work both collaboratively as part of a team and independently to deliver high-quality forensic outcomes.
Key responsibilities include the forensic imaging and extraction of data from mobile phones, computers, and storage media; supporting police officers and non-technical staff in the use of digital forensic systems; quality assuring and peer reviewing examinations; providing evidence viewing capabilities for investigators; answering technical queries; and attending court as a witness of fact when required.
The National Digital Exploitation Service (NDES), hosted by Counter Terrorism Policing London, brings together specialist digital investigative capabilities including Communications Data Exploitation, Open-Source Exploitation, Digital Media Exploitation, Lawful Intercept, Technical Innovation and Development, Digital Biometric Exploitation, and Digital Operations. As a Digital Specialist, you will provide technical expertise to NDES by developing bespoke software solutions, integrating external tools and scripts, and supporting operational and strategic objectives. The role involves working closely with Counter Terrorism Policing teams across the UK and Five Eyes partners, providing specialist advice and technical support.
Due to regular access to highly sensitive intelligence, candidates must hold or be willing to undergo Developed Vetting (DV).
Essential skills include competence in at least one of the following areas: software development (.NET/C#, Python, JavaScript, Java, PowerShell, Bash, PHP, VBA, CSS), cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud), or database design and SQL Server.
Desirable knowledge includes Agile development, TDD, continuous integration, reverse engineering, vulnerability research, networking, data visualisation, statistical computing, data centre technologies, Griffeye, and RETINA NextGen.
The Digital Investigator role requires a methodical approach to digital forensic investigations while supporting wider Counter Terrorism objectives. Responsibilities include creating forensically sound images of digital devices, analysing data using specialist forensic tools, recovering encrypted or deleted information, and identifying evidential links between suspects and digital material. Investigators produce clear technical reports and statements, extract relevant data for specialist assessment, and examine device usage, software, communications, internet activity, and stored media. The role also involves attending live scenes to preserve volatile digital evidence, supporting investigations as a lead examiner when required, collaborating with Senior Investigating Officers and partner agencies, and contributing to the development of digital forensic capabilities.
Candidates should have strong theoretical and practical knowledge of computer systems, operating systems, and networking, along with accreditation or equivalent experience using digital forensic tools. A working knowledge of ISO 17025 standards is desirable. The role requires flexibility to participate in a 24/7 on-call rota, work extended hours when operationally necessary, undertake specialist training (including CBRN if required), and travel overseas in support of investigations.
